	Burhan Güner
	The Musical Director
	Burhan was born in Perth and graduated from UWA with honours in trombone and musicology. More recently he studied conducting with John Hopkins at the University of Melbourne graduating with a Master of Music Degree. This year Burhan is Young Artist (conducting) with West Australian Opera and is Acting Musical Director for the St Mary's Cathedral Choir. He has appeared as guest conductor with ensembles in Perth and Melbourne and has been assistant conductor for WAAPA productions. In 2006 he founded the Fresh Arts Orchestra a community ensemble for young adults as well as establishing the Orchestral Repertoire Project providing an opportunity for music graduates to consolidate and expand their orchestral experience. He has also participated in selected modules of the Symphony Australia Conductor Development Course and will participate in the Mastercourse programme in 2007.
Burhan introduced himself to the choir in January 2007 with the following comments. "I will always remember my first concert with the UWA Choral Society in 2001. Being called in at the very last minute to conduct a very difficult programme is something you don't forget in a hurry! So it's with the greatest pleasure that I accept the position of Musical Director. There is no greater feeling than a full choir singing well in concert and that will be my ultimate aim as conductor. I feel rehearsals are the key, which I like to run as efficiently as possible but not without a lighter moment or two. Through my contacts in the Perth music scene I hope to introduce new artists to perform with UWACS, as well as maintaining the choirs relationship with regular and favourite guests. I would also like to see us collaborate on occasion with other community arts organizations. Such projects would allow UWACS to perform works that are currently beyond the UWACS budget. In my experience many of WA's capable but non-professional players are as keen to perform the great choral masterworks as we are keen to sing them. I look forward to our first rehearsal and the opportunity of meeting you all throughout the year."
